Thinking about weddings tonight. Remembering all the planning I did for my own, to make it a lovely day for me and my beloved.
Tonight I had the pleasure of speaking with a couple who had their wedding planned for June. A June wedding at a San Francisco Giant’s game. They had just completed addressing the invitations just before the reality of the pandemic hit; and future plans transformed to lots of question marks. Each of the couple would want their family and friends present… so what to do? As of now, we don’t know when groups may gather. One of the many results of this pandemic is forcing people to shift gears and figure out what works now… and what is the priority. Tonight I listened to two people who have experienced all the complexities of life and found each other… and are ready to accept each other and build a future together. And I heard a lot of the love that draws them together. And then the concern about not having their circle of family and friends present to witness their commitment to one another. We talked about options; which they already had considered. A small ceremony of 10 or less and then a renewal of vows later with the full gathering; or waiting and being at peace that the time will come and the full gathering and wedding will take place. I have faith they will figure out what will work best for them. What better pre-marital counseling that grappling with this crazy situation that no one could have predicted when they set the wedding date. I pray that I was able to hold space to empower them to make a decision that is THEIR decision. Again… I have faith in the power of love and I have faith in them.
Bill Withers died. My concern grows and more people die… the famous ones we hear about. The numbers elude to so many more we don’t know. Bill Withers… what a legacy of music he leaves for us. And as I think of weddings and more important… of marriage, I think of his song “Lovely Day”. Here are the lyrics:
Lovely Day Bill Withers, Studio Rio
When I wake up in the morning, love And the sunlight hurts my eyes And something without warning, love Bears heavy on my mind Then I look at you And the world's alright with me Just one look at you And I know it's gonna be A lovely day A lovely day When the day that lies ahead of me Seems impossible to face When someone else instead of me Always seems to know the way Then I look at you And the world's alright with me Just one look at you And I know it's gonna be A lovely day A lovely day
The couple I met with tonight, both stated they admired each other’s “Let’s Do It” attitude. To face whatever comes their way and just make the best and power through. Love is the greatest gift! The song makes it clear that any day is a lovely day when you have a love by your side. “Just one look at you and I know it’s gonna be a lovely day”.
My prayer this night is for this couple and so many in the same situation.
May you honor the true essence of the love that brought you together. May you welcome the ancestors and loved ones who have already left this earth that watch over you. May you be at peace that your love is alive and with you now. May you find grace at crossing out the date on those printed invitations and writing in the revised date, whenever that may be. Trust in yourselves and trust in love. And remember, each day can be a lovely day! “Let’s Do It”
May it be so…
